Community radio threatened by electronic media

DHARWAD: In the face of stiff competition from electronic media and private FM channels, the survival of community radio is threatened and the only way to overcome the challenge is to enrich the content of the programme, said professor A S Balasubrahmanya of department of mass communication and journalism, Karnatak University. 

Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day workshop on community radio organized by Information Department, KLE Society and University of Agricultural Scienes at UAS auditorium in Dharwad on Friday, he said those interested in setting up their own community radio should think differently and come up with innovative ideas to attract the masses. The objective of the community radio is to empower the target group and educate them. Thereby, community radio should feel the pulse of the target group and adopt local language in its programmes, he said. 

Balasubrahmanya felt that the laws enforced by the Union government to get licence to run community radio was complex and it was high time the government simplified the norms to bring in more changes in the field of mass communication. AIR was the most powerful media and can reach the remotest place. To empower the illiterates, the government should assist the community radio, he added. 

Extension director (UASD) L Krishna Nayak inaugurated the workshop and said UAS Dharwad was the first in the state to set up community radio in its campus and has been successful in imparting knowledge to the farmers. 

Programme chief at AIR Dharwad station Channamallikarjun Belakki said radio plays a major role in disaster management. Information department deputy director Basavaraj Kambi said community radio was for the community and by the community. For the success of community radio, participation of people was vital. The government is allotting Rs 10 lakh to support community radio, he said, and called upon the stakeholders to make use of the facilities.
